Forecasting from September to October 2019
Released September 12, 2019

Average ticket prices (ATPs) increased 0.8% month-on-month in July and August, and are expected to climb a further 2% month-on-month in September and October.
While data compiled by IATA shows that jet fuel prices at the end of August were down approximately 17% versus a year ago, this hasn’t yet translated to lower airfares. Travel managers should continue to carefully monitor their air programs and targets, and engage their airline partners for reviews if required.

Economy class usage is forecast to remain relatively stable, decreasing slightly over the next two months to 91%, just 1% less than the average usage for the year to date.

Advance booking performance peaked in August with 49% of trips being booked more than two weeks out – possibly due to better anticipation and planning by travelers ahead of the summer holiday season in many Northern Hemisphere markets. We forecast that advance purchase behavior will drop back to the annual average of 43% in September and October.
Travel managers should continue to engage with travelers and travel arrangers to emphasize the importance of advanced booking, and the impact it has on prices.

OBT usage continues to increase steadily, driven by a number of factors, including a superior user experience being delivered by the main OBT providers (including mobile apps), improvements to the content available through these channels, as well as corporate travel management teams encouraging their travelers to make more online bookings.
We expect OBT usage will rise by 4 percentage points from August levels to reach 55% of bookings by October.
